Parents onlineWe all spend a lot of time online these days, but have you ever thought about what other people do when they’re online? What sites do they visit? Are they being more productive or less productive than you?

Luckily, the Journal of Psychosocial Research in Cyberspace, recently conducted a study that answers just that: what are parents doing online? A curious subject, one which we will now enlighten you on…

Parents will be parents…even online

Interestingly enough, in the early 2000’s, parents had a higher propensity to own computers than those without children; so, now that we know that parents tend to be better connected, what are they choosing to access with their Internet connection? The study revealed that parents use the internet primarily to access information (no real surprise there), but specifically around parenting. Topics such as child development, and strategies for developmentally appropriate parenting were most popular. It makes sense that topics such as these would be high on the list, as these are not subjects you would necessarily want to rely on friends for, but rather gain access to professionals in the field. That being said, parents will engage in dialogue with other parents on discussion boards, a popular forum for seeking social support online.

Identity theft is just a step away when sharing information online

With such active online lives, what parents may not realize is how to protect themselves from social risks such as identity theft. While there are a lot of educational resources for parents about how to teach their children to utilize the Internet safely, it’s not clear how much of that information is applied to parent’s online behavior.

The good news is, it’s not something you need to worry about. With BullGuard Identity Protection, you’re automatically protecting your personal and financial information, all while monitoring any and all Facebook accounts, including yours and your children’s.
