Web domain nameNew web domains were launched last week, but what on earth
does that mean for you and why should you care? Well, first off let’s start
with what a web domain actually is – the letters that reside at the end of a
web address, the most common one that we all use would be ‘.com’.

The Internet
Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will be rolling out the four
new ones over the next few weeks. So, what are they? They are:

شبكة – Arabic for ‘web’

游戏 – Chinese for ‘game’

онлайн – Russian for ‘online’

сайт – Russian for ‘web site’

As you can see, these are quite different from the ones we are used to seeing, such as ‘.net’, ‘.com’and ‘.biz’. ICANN recently decided to open this system up, and invited applications for new names that companies would like to register. They’ve already received 2,000 new applications, including the likes of ‘.ninja’, ‘.ferrari’ and ‘.bbc’.
Apparently Google made over 100 requests, ‘.google’, ‘.youtube’, ‘.dad’, ‘.new’ and ‘.music’. They’ve now got their work cut out for that, especially sorting through web domains that were requested by more than one company, such as ‘.app’ or ‘.music’. For now, we’ve just got four new ones, but that in and of itself is quite an achievement, as they mark the first time non-Latin characters have been used.
