 Date Joined Jan 2008 Total Posts : 14 | Posted 10-6-2008 10:27 (GMT +1) | | Hi,
I'm on my parents' computer, which has Norton running and should be pretty secure. but I think it's got malware. Whenever any of the users goes to shudown, it comes up with an error message about the DCOM Server Process Launcher, and then after a countdown reboots. Other programs are unstable as well, though most of the time the machine runs pretty smoothly.
It it running XP Home, SP2, with Norton Internet Security. Please help!

and save it on the desktop. Then double click on it (Fix_download.exe).
You may have to allow the program to download files from the web!
The program download the necessary cleaning programs. Once the program is downloaded, there will be a folder on your desktop named Fix. – if the instructions not automatically opens, so double-click "FIX_manual.htm" in Fix folder.
Please follow the instructions and copy the logs here, in this Topic:
Note : Fix_download.exe is detected by some antivirus programs as a "RiskTool" /infection; it is not a virus. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
If necessary, temporarily disable your anti-virus, real-time protection before downloading
Do NOT post your problem in someone elses thread.

I downloaded and ran the programs, and no results were found, BUT combofix wouldn't run. It initially cam up with an error saying that the program had crashed, so I tried it in Safe Mode. Here it appeared to run, coming up very briefly with a command prompt, and then disappeared and stopped running. When I rebooted to normal mode it did the same there, too. This is happening with a number of other programs. When I tried to disable screensave before running combofix it crashed on me, and when I tried it in Safe Mode it didn't crash, but it didn't accept the new settings either. Sounds like malware, right?
So, nothing from a full norton scan, or from Malwarebytes. Here is the Malwarebytes log:

I've looked through my parents' Norton history log, and it doesn't seem to have found and cured any viruses lately, except a trojan that it found in an email and deleted., apparently before it detonated. I did remember to disable Norton antivirus and firewall before running Combofix, but I switched on Windows firewall as I did so, because I didn't want to leave the system totally unprotected.
Any ideas for what to do next, please? Thanks for all this help.

It seems that this computer just won't let me run it; it also won't let me run a whole load of other programs, most of which aren't security-related. | | Back to Top | | |

See if you can run it now.

No dice, I'm afraid. It still crashes.
It comes up with the following error message 7 times:
"Freeware implementation of REG.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close."
and asks me if I'd like to send an error report. Then, when I've said no to sending the error report (7 times) it comes up with the following error message:
"Error: Win32 only Incompatible OS. Combofix only works for Windows 2000 and XP"
This computer is running Windows XP Home.
Just to clarify, what I did each time was to disable Norton antivirus and firewall, enable Windows firewall, close everything, and run Combofix. I tried renaming it to slet.exe but it still crashed. | | Back to Top | | |

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
- Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
- Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
- Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
Click on Format and Uncheck Word wrap, if checked.
- Post back with both the resulting logs.
