Took me several tries before I finally was able to delete it in its entirety
. It is over 50 keys strong. The potential damage of the trojan is about Med
ium. Mainly annoyance and it disrupts Internet Explorer by adding space keys
. Adding extra weight to IE and Sbrowser.
The most intelligent thing about this trojan is it replicates itself every m
initue iexplore.exe is running!
HOW AMAZING IS THAT?
Here is how the Trojan works.
It opens your iexplorer with about :blank hp
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Internet Explorer\Main
Start Page = "about :blank"

It keeps it there and make sures it stays there with this key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Internet Explorer\Main
Search Page = "%Temp%\sp.html"

Hides in here
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\
Internet Explorer\Main
Start Page = "about :blank"

Hides in here
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\
Internet Explorer\Main
Search Page = "%Temp%\sp.html"

Hides in here
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Internet Explorer\Main Search Bar = "%Temp%\sp.html"

Hides in here
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Internet Explorer\Search
SearchAssistant = "%Temp%\sp.html"

Makes this process work
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Internet Explorer\Main
HOMEOldSP = "about :blank"

What a genuis trojan.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Internet Explorer\Main
Use Search Asst = "no"

Ok. now this is an annoying code.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Internet Explorer\Main
Use Custom Search URL = dword:00000001

this code makes it so much more diffucult to delete it.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\
Internet Explorer\Search
SearchAssistant = "%Temp%\sp.html"

And its functions
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Protocols\Filter\text/html
CLSID = "{D0D8AD92-08F9-4996-962E-B580952B2567}"
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Protocols\Filter\text/plain

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\
Protocols\Filter\text/plain
CLSID = "{D0D8AD92-08F9-4996-962E-B580952B2567}"

Here is how to delete it.

Open Registry Editor. Click Start>Run, type REGEDIT, then press Enter.

Search CLSID, there should be approximately 30 of them, DELETE all 30.
Search HomeOld, change about :blank to www.msn.com(or anything you want)
then go Start, SEARCH, type sp.html and Delete it.
Restart your computer. If you fail to succeed to fix it once, don't give up,
 try again.

And if you know the website which gave you the trojan, please reply back wit

Not knowledgable on REGEDIT.  I have this virus but it appears that when I search CLSID I find
it in numerous files, many more than the 30 files suggested.  Should I delete anything that appears that has CLSID (clsid) in it?
Here are a few files containing CLSID

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AccClientDocMgr.AccClientDocMgr\CLSID
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AccDictionary.AccDictionary\CLSID
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ADCCtl.ADCCtl.1\CLSID
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\BDATuner.AnalogTVTuningSpace.1\CLSID
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CID\5a6fbfd9-0a87-4f48-b1f4-42edd93ca6d5\Clsid
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

There appears to be hundreds of entrys like the last one.
Any help is appreciated.

Likewise, tried to follow instructions above, but found hundreds of CLSID entries
This week I've had 3 users bring their home PCs into work, for the IT dept to fix, with the latest examples of the Startpage Virus (Trojan- Adware, whatever you want to call it) - In every case just using Anti-Virus software failed to get rid of the virus, even doing all the things that normally work - like switching off system restore, running the Virus checker while in safe mode and manually tracking down the registry entries - The Virus just kept coming back every time you rebooted.
Eventually I got rid of it by running Adaware (must be latest version - downloaded after 4th August). This seemed to find all the registry entries and stop the virus rising from the dead -followed immeadiately (without rebooting) by a sweep by a normal up-to-date virus checker that detected the Virus itself.
Even then this left behind a DLL file (seemingly randomly named) which were classed by McAfee as being infected with Startpage (although at this stage the Virus itself is not "working" - This file just could not be deleted - even in Safe mode with no system restore and with ownership of the file it just refuses to be deleted. - Eventually out of desperation I loaded XP recovery console and went in through that to delete the little blighter -That worked OK. Presumably this last problem only occurs on WindowsXP and Windows 2000 PCs. Instructions for using the recovery console can be found at...

I don't think all of them, but can honestly say not sure on this the only people that might know would be your manufacturer or Microsoft because like you and I don't have that virus i have CLSID on my machine so I don't think deleting them all is a good idea.

Eagle smilewinkgrin

but will say this Sclyde has a pretty good way of getting rid of it if it's only 30 or so.

I'm a computer novice and have the start-page virus which is running as mtwirl on my computer and can't get rid of it. I believe it is also connected to a "Favorites" added to my computer with the pleasant name "Pretty teens" which I am also unable to delete - it just reappears even after emptying the recycling bin. I tried some of the suggestions on this web site reading others handling the problem (eg. using regedit, tried renaming as mtwirl.bogus) but didn't know where the "notepad" was. I'm confused, and frustrated. Any suggestions?

Ok you'll find notepad under accesories in the start menu, all programs, accesories, notepad. as far as the mtwirl goes do the regedit thing again only this time after you get out of regedit do a disk clean, if your running XP, you get there just like notepad except you go to system tools, then disk clean. when it's done analyzing you go to the more options tab go to the bottom button where it says remove all but the latest restore points and click it. then hit ok for everything else, it willask you if you are sure you want to perform thes actions say yes. then when that's done go back to start button, then go to the button that says control panel, click it, when that screen comes up click basic information about your computer, find the tab that says system restore, click it, when that appears put a check in the box that says shut down system restore. then get out of all that and do a shutdown on the machine, wait 15 seconds or so then restart. run your scan and see if your clean if you are then you sir are done.

Eagle smilewinkgrin

BTW you don't have to sturn the restore back on if you don't want to.

Eagle, appreciate your help. But what do I do when I get into regedit? I have several HKEY options. I looked in the folder containing CLSID but there's only 1 folder with 1 default in it named "AB(Default)".

By the way, this is a great website - very helpful.

Then don't worry about that file, do the regedit thing again when the window pops up type in mtwirl and delete the files that come up with that.

re:  startpage virus  startpage 8. bq  and dialer.10.bf

I ran AVG and adaware several times without success until I read Tony C's entry on Trojans.  I ticked the heuristic box and ran it again - this time the virus was healed and moved to the virus vault.

I also ran Ad-aware 6.0  in deep scan customise mode which goes everywhere.  Previously I hadn't.

This removed the page hijacker and about 197 objects of spyware.
It's a good job - cos I haven't got a clue about going into registrys etc.

(I turned off system restore - running XP Pro)

Is is true that Google has a hijack vulnerability.

Thanks for the forum!

Eagle, was successful in eliminating the virus thru regedit - or so I thought.  Although i eliminated the automatic start-page, resetting google as my homepage, whenever I type in another site address, I get html-not found and kicked to another start page -- this time "startium".  Deleted that from the regedit, but problem still persists - any suggestions?

Thanks.

Your running XP right?

If you are then try shutting down the system restore before you do a cold boot. sounds like you got it in your restore program. if your using bullguard then send your scanlogs to support@bullguard.com trust me they can help.

Hi.  Help please, I too am plagued by this startpage-du trojan.  I followed the instructions above, on how to delete all the CLSID files within certain regedit folders, only to find that I still have this trojan active.
After doing that I did a 'find' within regedit to look for any other CLSID files, only too find that I have an abundance of them, both files and folders/subfolders called CLSID.
My query is, can I delete each and every one of these or are there a certain number of them needed?  I did start deleting a number of them and after a while loaded my internet, and lo and behold I had my start page back, so one (or more) of those CLSID files I deleted must have been the correct one.
Thanks in advance.

That sir is where the debate begins,

and the answer is?! I have not a clue we are either gonna have to look this up or ask the proffessionals at some place like bullguard.com.

SClyde,
Thanks for this "Search CLSID" info, very much appreciated.
I have anti-virus, anti-bot and anti-adware programs but it and "about: blank" (hijacker) on IE got thru somehow.

I may have deleted a few of the wrong ones because I couldnt bring up my desktop (it blue-screened on me) after I deleted some of the CLSID files in regedit.
I had to boot with a Windows start-up disk, then :scanreg/restore, then into safe mode to do a "launch system restore" and then I got desktop back.

But it was definetly worth the scare, to get "about : blank" hijacker thing off my IE.

I havent finished deleting all of the CLSID files yet.
Just wondering if anyone else experienced anything similar with a blue screen/no desktop thing happening.

maybe I should have disabled "System Restore" first? -  before using/deleting the CLSID files in RUN>regedit?

Maybe it's just my computer, and it's earlier Windows than XP.

Anyway, thanks.
I'll be busy reading this forum for the next few days.

Hi Maera,

funny thing is it don't seem to hurt nothing,Ive found it on mine but it just sits there, have not found out if it's part of OS or not I'm almost thinking it is, But either way I honestly do think shutting down restore will work. You were saying that you have earlier version before XP which one?

Hi Eagle,
Thanks so much for the info you posted, as well.
They/hijackers etc slow my computer down too much, otherwise I wouldn't care.
It's just super-creepy, especially the keystroke trojans.
They also cause crashes on search engine pages.

Sorry maera,
I have'nt had any of those problems. so far the only time mine gets slow is with adware, corrected that problem when i went to mozilla.org and downloaded firefox. Have not had one incedent, that's why I'm wondering if it's a virus or not. Everyone who has these problems are all using IE6.Gotta admit it makes you think. But I'll check out Sclydes sites any way whi knows maybe I didn't get a really bad strain of it or something.

Thanks Eagle, this is a great forum.
My NAV deleted the viruses but I may still have other kinds of files
I have that same "system restore" problem with my program - the infected files replicate in there, I guess. Now I disable system restore before I run NAV scans.
Alot of people have gone back to IE5 because IE6 is so problematic.
I may do that too.
Thanks again.

you could do that but you would be better off getting firefox, it's free updateble and not that much different than IE hasn't got the holes in it either. also download ad-aware6 from lavasoft it works there's also cw schredder and several others so good luck with it ok and keep me posted

Thanks again Eagle. I will look into Firefox as soon as I have a chance. I haven't had time to look over this forum yet.
Can I leave IE on my computer or do I have to uninstall IE before installing Firefox?
I have the ad-aware6, but I had forgotten to do Updates this past week. Is it really necessary to virus scan everything from download.com? That's where I got my free ad-aware6.
I also have Spybot. I don't know what a cw shredder is but spybot has a shredder.
Thank-you very much for all of your help.

P.S. after I downloaded the updates for ad-aware6, it seemed to remove the remaining CLSID files.
One more question, is it safe to disable system restore and then run ad-aware6? I have done it, but it may have been what caused the temporary loss of my desktop - the blue-screen thing I described - not sure. Really not sure how I did that, must have deleted something somewhere by accident. Just want to make sure I don't make the same mistake again.
Is there a section about IM's here? My friends insisted that I get an IM, I downloaded AOL AIM and it gave me error messages saying:
AOL System Msg: Your screen name (S-----) is now signed into AOL(R) Instant Messenger (TM) in 3 locations. Click here for more information.

There wasn't any info on this in AIM help and I was a fraid that I had been hacked into through the AIM program.
My computer dials out on more than one ISP #, maybe dial-up causes this error message. There are quite a few #'s in my ISP dial-up because there are quite a few area codes in my city.

Hello Meara,
yes it's ok to turn off restore in fact if you want too you can leave it off, No I don't believe you have to scan everything from download .com your AV prgram should do that for you if it's not then get another one. yes you can leavce IE on the computer you will need it for some things, (like doing microsoft updates) just make one or the other your default browser. As far as AOL goes you need to get a hold of thier tech suport and let them go thru the settings with you on that phone number thing they can tell you how to set one of them up as a default number, also sounds like you have more than one internet connection, they will also help with that. keep me posted and good luck.

To remove the virus:
- Follow the instructions provided at the top by SClyde (stop at the part about removing all the CLSID entries-- it's too risky). In my case, I ran HiJackThis and removed all the registry entries named or referred to SP.HTML, HomeOldSP, Use Search Asst, etc.
- Boot to DOS and delete C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\JBFDEC.DLL, reboot your system then delete C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\SP.HTML. In my case, McAfee VirusScan 7.0 detected the above two files as StartPage-DU but was not able to clean or delete them.

Hi Billy just one question,
when you did this did it seem that your problem was the same as everyone elses?
I mean I'm not really having any problems, Meara is and I guess sclyde is, is it possible that this virus effects different computers in different ways? just a thought.

Eagle smilewinkgrin

Look foward to your answer cause you besides sclyde seem to be the only ones who really might know something of this.
