Hi, here is what happened: I installed Windows XP with SP2 on a computer that was not on the net. There was no log-in screen, it just booted to my desktop. I put the on the net and downloaded AVG and all recommended Windows Updates. I followed the instructions to reboot. There was now a login screen. When I tried to log in it got as far as a cursor on a blue screen then immediately went to "Saving your settings" and returned to the log in screen. It did this for the administrator and the one user on the computer. The same thing happened everytime I tried to log in. I rebooted in safe mode and ran AVG. AVG ran in command line mode and found loads of files infected with win32\virut. It removed these to the virus vault and/or "healed" them. I then tried to reboot and log in, but the same thing as before started happening again. I then tried to reboot to safe mode, but it now throws up a login window in safe mode, gets to the blue screen and then immediately logs out again.
I can no longer get in to my own computer - is there anything I can do (apart from reformatting my hard drive) as I don't want to lose the data on the C drive. Incidentally, isn't it worrying that I managed to get this virus even though I only went to Microsoft and grisoft web sites?
