I have easily removed viruses recently without administrator help. This is how: I have specified a folder to keep my temporary internet files which is easy to access [I have chosen it to be on a seperate partition to C where windows is installed, which may or may not be an advantage]. I also have bought and installed Webroot Window Washer which I highly recommend and have set it to clear temorary files when windows shuts down. A big advantage to this is that Bullguard will flash up a virus warning if a virus is in there when ever shutting down windows. The following action now needs to be taken. Shut down windows and restart in Safe Mode, pressing down the F8 key [on my computer, yours may be different] which enables you to choose starting windows in Safe Mode. Go to My Computer and browse your way to your temporary internet files folder. Beware that it almost certainly has stuff in it even if it appears to be empty, even if you do have Show Hidden Files ticked in your folder options [naughty microsoft]! Right click on it and select Scan with Bullguard. Bullguard will quickly find the virus and you can go through Bullguard's delete process, with increasing Turn up the Heat settings, which is cool, excuse pun! Virus removed message will hopefully show. Restart the computer normally, run a wash with Webroot Window Washer which shouldn't detect a virus anymore and you have peace of mind of a cleaned computer! Do a full system scan with bullguard overnight just to be sure. I think it would be great if Bullguard introduced something like Window Washer as a recommended add-on. The programs certainly compliment each other.
If you have a highspeed Internet connection make sure the windows firewall is turned on (if your using Win9x get Kerio or ZoneAlarm).
Keep up to date on windows patches through the automatic update function built into WinXP or by using update.microsoft.com
It sounds like your have the virus and spyware piece taken care of (although you probably wouldn't want to be running AVG and Avast concurrently) you might want to consider RootkitRevealer or Ghostbuster to track down any rootkits that may be hiding out.
