hi, found your site through a yahoo search for my computer problems.

fingers crossed someone can help.

i started getting problems a few weeks ago and did a system restore, this was ok but when it finished it said that some files had to be renamed to save them ( sorry cant remember what the files were)

things started getting worse so i tried to undo the system restore, it wouldnt let me undo it or perform another one, just says its not been possible and to try again etc

thought i wouild clean my computer up a bit and delete stuff i didnt use etc and then tried to defrag, it wont let me defrag and i get this meesage

"MMC cannot open file C:WINDOWS\system32\drfg.msc

This may be becasue the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file"

so thought id try a search for this MMC, i cant perform a search either and i get this message

"A file that is required to run Search Companion is missing. You may need to run setup"

when i try and run setup i get this

"Please go to control panel to install and configure system components"

so i have no system restore, no defrag and no search, unless there is soemthing else missing that i dont know about yet.

someone told me to install service pack 1 for XP here, that it may restore the search facility http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/winxpsp1.html

but when i tried to run it after downloading it i got the message that i was using a later version.

HELP!!

i dont have the original discs for this computer either so i cant solve it that way.

I use Zonealarm firewall and AVG anti virus, but i am trying out avast anti virus since these problems started as i think they may have been caused by a virus that AVG missed. Avast found 2 and healed them.

I also use ad-aware, spybot and cwshredder on a regular basis

as far as i am aware i already have service pack 2 and when i went to that link you gave me it confirmed:

"Your computer has already been upgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). For tips or help using it, see the SP2 support and how-tos."

thought i might try and reinstall it to see if it fixed any problems but then i got this message

Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered ir installed on your computer.

To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)

or

Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem

when i click on continue i get the internet explorer problem encountered, internet explorer needs to close etc. and then it all closes down. I tried to do it with firefox but no luck

hello again Troy,

ok i downloaded Ewdio and followed all your instructions, everything was ok till i turned off system restore then i got this message

"System restore has encountered an error trying to enable/disable one or more drives. Please restart your machine and try again"

when tried to turn it back on i got the message again

when i treid to load up system restore to see if previous restore points had been deleted ok i got this message

"System Restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer and then run System Restore again"

when i press ok it shuts down system restore.

I have rebooted several times but still get the same messages.
