Hi Gregg,
The Explorer problem is likely to be caused by a corrupted handler for image files or by a 3rd party shell extension installed on your computer. But we also should not exclude the possibility of an infection.
For starters, please try to follow these steps:
First of all, I will need you to create a Backup copy for your registry: Start-> Run-> type "regedit" and press [Enter]. Then in the Regedit window, select the My Computer entry, press File-> Export, choose the name and the location for the Backup copy and then press Save.
A. Then, I will need you to disable Thumbnail View for the Documents folder:
- Open the Registry Editor (Start-> Run-> type "regedit" and press [Enter]).
- Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced.
- Double-click the DisableThumbnailCache value, or go to Edit -> New -> DWORD value to create a new value by that name.
- Enter 1 for its value.
- Click Ok and close the Registry Editor when you're done; you'll have to log off and then log back on for this to take effect.
B. Also, I will need you to delete the default handler for .Jpeg file types:
- Open the Registry Editor (Start-> Run-> type "regedit" and press [Enter]).
- Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpeg\PersistentHandler.
- Double-click the Default value, and delete everything written in the Value Data field.
- Click Ok and close the Registry Editor when you're done; you'll have to log off and then log back on for this to take effect.
Please let me know about the outcome of this procedure, and please try to post a HijackThis log as well in order to make sure there are no obvious infections present on your computer.
As for the DVD-Rw problem, please let me know what type of DVD-Rw are you using, what burning software and last but not least what type of blanks are you using.
