Anyone's got a good virus-story? Good or bad, come share it!

One that comes to mind is the one about an (anonymous) friend of mine, who wasn't exactly a computer-expert. Furthermore, she wasn't quite sure what that whole computer-virus-thingy was all about, anyway.

It's some years back and, as far as I remember, it was the CodeRed virus which hit her computer one fateful night. When the virus activated, she got so scared, that she shut down her computer (good idea), locked the doors (hmm....) and turned off the lights (huh?). Then she called me.

She told me about her... precautions, and when I asked her the rather obvious question of "why?" she replied "Well, what if they are coming?"

Of course, today we laugh about it, but rest assured that there was absolutely nothing funny about it that night. She was scared - real scared. In my book that goes to show what a destructive construction a computer-viruses really is - it's not just about data- or money-loss. No one should take pride in creating such a thing. And rest assured that, should my friend meet the virus-author some day, she's gonna kick his sorry a**

I'd like to add a comment to this story and it's serious...my wife has recently
decided to start working again as a freelance and has necessarily been exposed to
much more e-mail traffic than in the past....she has become very concerned/scared recently
about the amount of spam, infected e-mails and downright porn which has found its way into
her profile in Outlook Express...even though there are all types of protections running in the
background (Norton,Bullguard, McAfee etc.etc. ).
Whereas I tend to delete everything which looks vaguely suspicious and consistently remove
myself/unsubscribe myself from spoof e-mail lists she has not yet developed the "skin" to deal
with it. So it's very much a new "threat" which should not be ignored....

Go to www.mailwasher.net and download their mailwasher program. You can preview your e-mails on a web-based viewer and delete them, bounce them (Bounce them back to the sender as thou your address does not exist), and or blacklist them. Great little program!

Ahh viruses can cause a lot of damage for the "basic" user

My friend got a virus, as her anti-virus window popped up and said it had caught the virus and dis-infected it. She pulled the power cable out and opened the PC cover. Ripped the Hard-Disk out and threw it away. The next day she had to go out and buy another 150 GB Hard-Disk. She came round and asked me to put it in for her. When i asked her why did she do it. She replied "So it couldent ruin the other parts of my PC" rolleyes
