How to use the HijackThis removal tool

The HijackThis removal tool is a very powerful freeware utility created by Merijn Bellekom, from the Netherlands.

It is not an antivirus, it does not require updates and definition files, it does not provide a full system scan of the computer

like an antivirus does, it only offers an overview of the processes, registry entries and applications that are active at the time

when the tool is used.

Note: Only use this utility when advised by a security expert, or a member of the BullGuard Support Team. Using the

HijackThis tool without expert’s advice could seriously damage the integrity of your Windows installation.

You can use the HijackThis tool when you believe you need advanced virus removal solutions, if a full antivirus scan does not detect certain infections. At BullGuard, we have advanced removal solutions in cases of emergency.

Note: HijackThis 1.0 is only designed for Windows XP (and below).

Please download the HijackThis utility from this link.

When prompted, choose Save and then select a location to download the file.

1. After downloading the file, go to the location you chose, right-click the hijackthis.zip file and choose Extract Here.

2. Double-click the HijackThis.exe file to run the tool.

3. Click OK to continue after reading the notification message.

4. Click the Do a system scan and save a log file button.

5. HijackThis will start scanning. After it has finished, the log file will open automatically.

Note: You can either Copy-Paste the log contents in an email or a forum post, or send the file as an email attachment

(it is saved as hijackthis.log in the same location as the tool).

IMPORTANT! Please do NOT attempt to check any entries in HijackThis and fix them without the proper assistance

from a security expert. Not all entries reported by the tool are viruses or trojans, in fact the majority of entries are legitimate Windows processes. A security expert will be able to identify any active infections (if present), and will tell you exactly

how to use the tool to get rid of them.

Get expert help on the BullGuard Antivirus Forum or by contacting BullGuard Support.

Please note that the HijackThis tool does not replace an antivirus or firewall. Even if you have managed to solve a problem

using it, you still need active protection, for which reason we strongly suggest you keep BullGuard active on your PC

at all times and perform regular updates and scans.
