Watch out, Android users: You’re being had. Again!

London, 21 February, 2012: Once again, Android users have being scammed, warns security experts at BullGuard, a leading PC and mobile security company.

This time, what appeared to be an official Pinterest app tried to steal information, in what has become a classic example of the poor security and control applied to Android apps.

Pinterest is the latest, hottest online venue. Millions of users are sharing links and photos, making it a very attractive scene for internet criminals.

In early February, what seemed to be an official Pinterest app appeared on Android Market. The application was fake and created by scammers with the intent to spam users with fake competitions, ads (adware), etc. The makers of the fake app would also be able to sell the user information obtained through the various scams on the ”Black Exchange” for stolen personal information.

The application has now been removed, but a lot of people downloaded it before it was spotted. BullGuard advises all Android users to have a comprehensive security program on their phone. It is also recommended to check out the applications before installing them – this should include reading reviews and most importantly not get carried away by the excitement, when a long-awaited app for a favourite service is launched.

If a bit of time had been spent researching the Pinterest app, users would have discovered, that Pinterest did not have an application for Android yet!

Good app hunting!
