 How to use the Firewall

This guide will show you how to use the BullGuard Firewall.

IMPORTANT! The Firewall is a very important section of any Internet Security suite, so we recommend using the guide below only if you know what you are doing, or you have received instructions from our Support Team. If you are not familiar with computers, it is recommended that you team up with a computer-wise friend, or contact our Support Team.

What  is a firewall?

A firewall is a special computer application (or module within a security suite, such as BullGuard) whose purpose is to monitor and protect your computer from any unauthorised network traffic. Think of it as a guard at your door.

Why do you need a firewall?

Without a firewall, you computer is vulnerable to almost any type of network attacks and malware. We recommend using a firewall at all times you are connected to the Internet.

How can you use the firewall?

Our firewall is included within the BullGuard Internet Security suite. We recommend using this guide if you want to know more about configuring it or need to perform any changes.

1- button  Open the Firewall

First, you should open your BullGuard application. Double-click the BullGuard icon near the clock and click on the Firewall icon.

2- button  How to see to see advanced connection details for all applications that require

   Internet/network connection

This guide will help you get a detailed view of the rules for every application on your computer that requires a network/Internet connection.

In the Firewall section, choose the Advanced mode.

Next, click the Activity tab. You will now see advanced details on all applications from your computer that need network/Internet connection. Using the right mouse button, you will be able to expand or colapse all rows in order to see/hide the advanced details.

The information found under each file is the number of connections open by each monitored application (protocol type, IP addresses and ports in use). The text in red means that those ports or applications are blocked and the text in green means they are allowed. The text in black means represents an internal BullGuard application or port currently in use.

IMPORTANT!

If an application is blocked, then it will not be able to use the Internet connection.

SVCHOST.EXE and Generic Host for Win 32 applications are valid Windows system files. Blocking them might disable your Internet connection - so they always must be set to Allow.

If you notice any entry related to your email client (such out Outlook or Thunderbird) or Internet browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox etc.), please make sure they are set to Allow. If they are not, you will probably encounter issues such as the inability to browse the Internet and or to send/receive emails.

If you are unsure about any information displayed in this tab, please do not hesitate to contact us via Email or Live Chat.

Congratulations! You are now able to monitor the traffic on your network/Internet connection!
