The European View On Safety And Respect On The Internet

Europe is taking control of the internet. The Council of Europe is promoting an internet that is safe, and all-inclusive. As we all know, the internet offers many opportunities and has changed all of our lives for the better, but as we all also know, it is not without its risks. The goal of the new Council of Europe is to use the internet to promote democracy and cultural diversity, all while combating cybercrime.
Their website, ins@fe, www.saferinternet.org, is co-funded by the European Union and offers a European network of Awareness Centres designed to promote the safe and responsible use of the internet via computer or mobile devices. The site is tailored to different target routes, to better target information. You can select information for Children & Young People; Parents, Carers & Seniors; Teachers & Educators; Social Care & Health Service Workers; Third sector & Community Organizations and Industry. The site allows you to report illegal content, and to also access Helplines in your country. A special focus is placed on the Children & Young People, as they have been identified as the group that perhaps needs the most leadership and tools to learn how to navigate the internet in a safe manner. Children must be able to safely learn, play and communicate via the internet, and should be able to do so without the worry of falling prey to privacy scams, or predators. BullGuard recommends taking a minute to explore the site, and learn about specific issues or tools that might be unique to different European countries. The Council of Europe and ins@fe’s strategy has set out a coherent vision for a sustainable and long-term approach to the internet, but its success will depend largely on stakeholder support. Should this initiative become a success, there will be fantastic learnings that can be passed on to other countries with similar issues, helping us all make the World Wide Web a safe and solid resource for all to enjoy. Meanwhile, you can take the fun “Connect with Respect” quiz they’ve laid out for you, to test your knowledge about internet safety and respect, and get some useful insights along the way.
