You may have noticed recently a lot of media coverage about the importance of email password security.
This is not surprising. There have been some huge data breaches over the past 12 months and millions of email passwords have been heisted from databases.
These passwords should be encrypted, or better still hashed
However, despite these protective measures hackers can sometimes still discover the passwords using brute force techniques and easily so if they are simple passwords.
This makes many passwords vulnerable.
Your passwords are the most common way to prove your identity online, for instance using websites, accessing email accounts and other accounts.
If a hacker gets hold of passwords for email accounts and deciphers them, tremendous damage can be done.
There are many instances of people losing lots of money after hacking email accounts.
A fraudster can quickly identify ‘valuable’ emails for instance, messages to a solicitor about a house deposit, or a mail to an accountant about payments.
They intercept these mails and pose as the recipient, saying they’ve changed their bank account and can payment be made to the new account (the fraudsters account).
This to one side who wants someone snooping in their email account?
Creating strong passwords
It’s fair to say that data breaches are out of your control but this means that you need to create strong passwords that can withstand hacker’s cracking techniques.
In short, the more complex a password, the harder it is to crack.
With this in mind:
- Passwords should be a minimum of 16 characters
- They should be made up of a combination of numbers, symbols, upper and lower case letters and you can also add in spaces
- It shouldn’t contain full words or usernames or known letter and number sequences such as ‘qwerty’ or ‘1234567’
Password managers are great tools for creating complex passwords and storing them so you don’t forget them.
