There’s little worse that turning on your computer and being faced with an unwanted barrage of pop-up ads.
If this happens then you can be certain your computer has been infected with cunning malware designed to make its creator money at your expense.
The likelihood is that it’s either adware or a Trojan tracker. As the ads pop up the aim is to get you to click on them so you’ll click through to various websites, many of which are a bit unsavoury.
When you accidentally click the link the miscreants who created this malware make advertising money.
Getting rid of the pop-up pest
If you go to ‘Uninstall or change a program’ in your computer’s Control panel you can search for the intrusive program and simply ‘uninstall’ it.
That said, this type of malware infection can be sneaky and bury itself somewhere it can’t be seen.
Alternatively you can take the following steps:
Enter safe mode
Disconnect your PC from the internet and don’t use it until you’re ready to scan your PC.
If your computer has an adware infection, boot your PC into Microsoft’s Safe Mode. In this mode, only the minimum required programs and services are loaded.
If adware is set to load automatically when Windows starts, entering in this mode may prevent it from doing so.
Delete temporary files
Now that you’re in Safe Mode, you’ll want to run a virus scan. But before you do that, delete your temporary files.
If you are using Windows 10 find Disk Cleanup in the search bar or after pressing the Start button and select the tool that appears named Disk Cleanup.
If not type in ‘delete temporary files’ into the search bar and follow the instructions.
Run a scan
If you’re using BullGuard Internet Security then it will detect and stop adware infections before they can blitz your screen.
If you’re not then before you can take any of these steps download a trial version and then run a scan.
Once the scan is complete, BullGuard will show you the results. Any malware will have been picked up and quarantined.
