Also regarding my desktop background, I can choose to have the solid color, but I can't use any pictures.

For a start it is worth restarting your computer in safe mode - then scanning with your antvirus software (Malwarebytes')

You may have to scan a couple of times before the fake antvirus software is identified for removal.

If this doesn't work, www.bleepingcomputer.com has much information and help with removal of Windows 7 Recovery. Click on to the site's Spyware Removal tab.

Others with more knowledge might be able to help you further but it is always worth scanning in safe mode - it has worked for me in the past.

Good luck and please let this Forum know how you get on.

Hi,

This is a Bullguard forum - maybe download and install Bullguard Internet security ? Then run in safe mode. I have seen this before though and it is likely that your windows profile has been altered by the virus. After scanning, I would suggest you may need to go to Control Panel>Folder Options>View> check 'Show hidden files and folders'. Then navigate to your user account and unhide all those folders related to your account such as Documents, Pictures etc. Some system folders are meant to be hidden though. Unhide those that have your own content. An alternative is to create a new user account and transfer your data across to the new one. Ultmately you may need to re-install the operating system.

Good luck

This is the same virus I have, I have run (in safe mode) cccleaner, avast, super antispyware, malwarebytes all have found threats and deleted them but did not solve the problem. I manually 'unhid' my files so I can see my files now, but task manager and others are still disabled. I read it is a rootkit trojan - have just asked Touche what the next steps should be. My problem though is I cannot access the internet as it says it is running and yet I cannot stop it because my task manager is disabled. Very frustrating.

Hi

A rootkit is one of the most difficult to get rid of - best way is to back up your data and re-install the OS. If you've the time to battle it I would advise removing your hard drive and using an adapter (or place in a caddy) scan on a separate PC if you have one. This way the virus has little chance of starting up. Otherwise, try the rootkit tools downloadable from Kaspersky and another from Symantec - both offer good scanning for the TDSS rootkit and variants.

Cheers

Jim
