Hey :cool:

It´s a nasty thing you´ve got there

[color=#0000ff>Hijackthis

Please make a new folder to put your HijackThis.exe into. Anywhere on your hard drive is fine other than your Desktop or the Temp folder. I suggest you use something like "C:\Program Files\HijackThis" but feel free to use any name.
This is to ensure it makes the necessary backups for recovery if needed.

Run Hijackthis exe-

Push - Do a systemscan and save a logfile – button

And Highlight the Entire Log by pressing Ctrl+A and Copy it. Post log here

I´ll look to it

Click here: Before-posting-a-log[/2]

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Do not PM me with logfiles. They will be deleted.

I've got this bugger, too. Would it be best to reduce or eliminate online activity while this is going on?

Some friends suggest that I simply do a huge backup job and wipe the slate clean. I literally can't see any other viable option, as this whatever-it-is has begun to go a step further than redirecting me from relevant sites and is now actively closing IE6 upon the execution of relevant urls.

The following was also relayed to me:

"KamaKase @ Trivialbeing.net Forums" wrote:

1) Disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP).
2) Update the virus definitions.
3) Run a full system scan and delete all the files detected as that virus
4) Delete the value that was added to the registry.

In detail:
1)
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
On the System Restore tab, check Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore on all drives.
(Turn it back on if you want at the very end)
2 & 3) I'm guessing you need norton for this bit....or similar.
4)
Click Start > Run.
Type regedit

Then click OK.

Navigate to the keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\txtfile\shell\open\command

# In the right pane, delete the value:

"lsess" = "%System%\lsess.exe"

# Navigate to and delete the following registry keys:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ANSMTP.OBJ.1
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ANSMTP.OBJ
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ANSMTP.MassSender.1
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ANSMTP.MassSender
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{253664FB-EDFC-4AC6-BD69-B322F466AEED}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{887A577B-406B-48FF-80CB-70752BFCD7B4}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Typelib\{DE6317F7-6EF0-45C2-88D1-8E09415817F1}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{68B8DCDB-EFA4-420A-BB8A-71B9892A2063}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{1E98666F-6260-42C9-B846-32B20fDEFE7B}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{A5F6C90C-ABE4-4C57-A421-8C5A202AA9F8}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{B13281CF-8778-4C98-AE23-ABBA4637A33D}

I tried this, but none of the registry keys or "lsess.exe" files specified here exist for me to delete them. I'm wondering if there would be a way to know what their variable (from computer to computer) names or paths might be. Maybe one of you will have luck with this method. If you do, please report back.

Hi Folks,

Having downloaded spybot, it detected the problem and in doing so fixed the problem, through it's remedial actions.

There are a few registry settings and exe files to be deleted.

The download version of spybot will tell you where the problem is.

If you dont want to purchase it, you can clean it up manually.

Time consuming but effective.

Regards

I did a manual clean of this virus, not that difficult really. Firstly, this virus enters your system because your computer has not been updated recently through Windows Update. Run this first as there is a patch available for the security issue. When this has been done, start the computer in Safe mode (press F8 just after the BIOS screen, you will get a menu to select Safe mode). This virus drops the following files into your computer, I think they were in the /Windows/System32/ folder:
msole32.exe
popuper.exe
shnlog.exe
Do a search for these files on your system and delete them including the files found in the Prefetch folder. Go into the registry editor next. Usually these virus startup entries are located in the following folders:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You can do a search within the registry for the above filenames, I found them within the following folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies (there should only be 3 more folders after this - NonEnum, Ratings and system. I think I found one labelled Explorer with more startup entries within.) Delete the entries, even the one for msmgs.exe as this is not needed either. I was unsure to start with but checked on another computer and only showed the 3 folders after policies.

When you next start the computer, you will also have to reset your Internet Explorer settings.

If you have deleted the above files, changed the registry as explained and installed the latest updates, you should be clean. You can also try AdWare to find and remove anything left.

Let me know how you get on.
