Crime reporting appWould you report a crime via an app? Well the option is out there. iPhone app Red Handed allows you to film and post videos of any crimes you witness. Instead of an app centered around a social network, this one is more focused on social awareness. Everyone’s always filming the ridiculous things they witness around them, and uploading them to YouTube, this app is just taking advantage of existing behavior and putting it to good use.

Video’s are automatically geo-tagged, and added to the app’s map, videos are classified by type of crime, and can be uploaded anonymously or via an account. Users are able to search for videos by location, as well as comment on incidents. Alerts are also available, for example, you could set up an alert when a crime occurs in your area (based on your GPS in your phone). There’s also a Google map component which shares at-a-glance crime statistics for areas, based on the number of videos uploaded.

Red Handed App : report a crime by calling directly the Police

While Red Handed has not yet confirmed a partnership with the police, users are able to call the police when they see something that requires their attention. Red Handed developers anticipate a low potential for misuse and there’s quite a few videos uploaded already.

There are definitely pros and cons to an app like this entering our world. Do we run the risk of existing in a Big Brother state with eyes everywhere, or will this help us each take more responsibility for the safety of others?

What do you think?
