Jailbreaking. Good Or Bad?

Over the last few months the topic of Jailbreaking phones and tablets has been a hot subject of conversation across the web. Why? Because although it may provide users with more freedom in adjusting their phone settings to their liking, it may also expose them to security threats and certain risks.
Here is a simple guide to Jailbreaking: “The good and the bad of Jailbreaking”. In case you decide to go for it, it’s best you make an informed decision. But first off…

What is jailbreaking?

Manufacturers and mobile network operators impose software limitations. However, these limitations can be overruled by Jailbreaking your Apple Device –the equivalent term for Android devices is “Rooting”. In short, Jailbreaking a device allows you to run unapproved apps and frees it from a specific carrier.

The Good.

There’s a variety of reasons why Jailbreaking is considered "good". It enables you to:
  • Customize the look and feel
  • Download unauthorized/unapproved apps
  • Get customized ringtones
  • Use it with a different carrier or overseas

The Bad.

Once you Jailbreak your phone, you can’t go back. You’ll probably void your warranty, so check with your carrier first as you’ll be responsible for any and all issues moving forward. Downloading unapproved apps could put your device at risk. It’s important to note, Jailbreaking is illegal in some countries and on certain devices, like tablets. Do your research online first, before unintentionally committing a crime in your country. Have you “Jailbroken” your phone? How do you feel about this practice? Tell us
